This is a photomicrograph showing Chromium Carbides in the soft matrix of Austenite.  It is these carbides that give the overlay plate the excellent abrasion resistant qualities.

forming.jpg (15825 bytes)

Forming is not usually a problem.  Here the overlay plate is being roll formed.  It can also be formed on a breaker press as well.  Forming radii are dependent upon the material thickness and the manufacturer of the plate should be consulted for optimum parameters.

plasmacut.JPG (8797 bytes) Because of the Chromium content of the overlay, it is advised to cut the plate using plasma cutting equipment.  Field cuts can be made using special techniques.  The plate manufacturer should be consulted on parameters, etc.
