Mechanical effects such as TRAVEL SPEED and ELECTRICAL STICKOUT can also influence the ferrite number (FN). Keeping in mind that heat is the big culprit in overlaying or welding of 300 series stainless steels, it can be seen that increasing the travel speed of the torch will increase the FN and prevent cracking. If cracking is experienced in an overlay and a FN=2 is measured, simply increasing the travel speed or electrical stickout will increase the FN and prevent the cracking.
