Note that changing the welding machine parameters and mechanical parameters have opposite affects upon the overlay problems of cracking and corrosion. All of these parameters have the same affect upon heat however. This is illustrated in the above slide.
In summary, it is most important to overlay with as little heat input as possible. Preheat and Interpass temperatures should be kept to a minimum and in accordance with recommended values for the substrate or base plate.
